I-80 is the primary freight and travel route across Iowa. For truckers or travelers looking for a place to stop, there’s no better place than Waspy’s Truck Stop, in Audubon, Iowa.

I-80 Crosses the Nation

Interstate 80 is an east-west route across Iowa.

Crossing the nation from New Jersey to San Francisco, Interstate 80 is one of the great American roads.

I-80 was designated in 1956 as one of the original routes of the Interstate Highway System. Construction on the final segment of the road was completed in 1986. The Iowa portion of the route was built between 1958 and 1972.

I-80’s trans-American route approximately follows the route of the historic Lincoln Highway, the very first road across the nation.

It’s the second-longest interstate highway in the United States behind I-90. It runs more than 2,899 miles (307 in Iowa) across 11 states and four time zones.

In Iowa alone, nearly 35,000 vehicles a day use I-80, which is the longest interstate in The Hawkeye State.

Though I-80 runs mostly through rural areas of Iowa, a third of the state’s population still lives within the I-80 corridor.
